Today's Congress Congress: The Basics Congress: Teaching It
Historical Materials: Measures of Congressional Workload

The following two tables summarize the workload of the Senate and House of Representatives from the 80th Congress (1947-48) through the 106th Congress (1999-00) using these indicators: number of bills introduced, number of bills passed, number of recorded votes taken on the floors of the respective chambers, the number of days in session, and the number of committee and subcommittee meetings. These data are drawn from a much more extensive study of congressional statistics, Vital Statistics on Congress, 2001-2002 (Washington: American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, 2000):146-47 by Norman J. Ornstein, Thomas E. Mann, and Michael J. Malbin. To order this excellent book, vist AEI's web site at http://www.aei.org/press.htm.
